Morocco international Sofiane Boufal says he remains determined to fight for a place in Morocco’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after reviving his career with French side Le Havre AC.
The 31-year-old winger has enjoyed a resurgence since joining the Ligue 1 club in January, gradually rebuilding form and confidence after a difficult spell marked by inconsistency and recurring physical problems.
Boufal’s influence has quickly grown within the Le Havre squad, where his technical ability and creativity have helped him become an important figure under coach Didier Digard.
His performances were rewarded earlier this year when he was voted the club’s player of the month for February, recognition that reflected both his individual displays and his growing importance to the team.
The former Morocco national football team star has used regular playing time in France to regain rhythm and improve his physical condition, developments he believes could strengthen his chances of returning to the international stage ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Speaking to Foot Mercato, Boufal admitted that another appearance at football’s biggest tournament remains one of his major ambitions.
“I’m lucky to be able to play a series of matches without physical problems, to get back into form. So it’s an objective. Especially with my history with Morocco, the competitions I’ve been able to do, the experience I’ve been able to gain,” he said.
Boufal was part of the Moroccan squads that competed at previous major international tournaments and has built a strong connection with supporters through his performances for the Atlas Lions.
His experience at the highest level, combined with his ability to influence matches in attacking areas, could still make him a valuable option as Morocco prepare for another World Cup campaign.
However, competition for places in the national team is expected to remain fierce, with Morocco continuing to produce a growing number of attacking talents playing across Europe’s top leagues.
Boufal acknowledged the challenge of earning a recall but made clear that his recent form has renewed belief that he can still contribute at international level.
Despite keeping his World Cup ambitions alive, the winger stressed that his immediate priority remains helping Le Havre avoid relegation from Ligue 1.
The French club continue to battle for survival in the top flight, and Boufal emphasised that securing the team’s status remains his primary focus before turning full attention toward international objectives.
He also insisted that his commitment to Morocco would not change regardless of whether he is ultimately selected for the tournament.
