Mohamed Salah is on the brink of another major Liverpool milestone as the forward prepares to potentially become the club’s all-time leading assist provider in the Premier League.
The Egyptian heads into Friday’s meeting with Aston Villa level with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard on 92 league assists for Liverpool FC.
One more assist at Villa Park would move Salah clear at the top of the club’s Premier League assist standings and add another landmark achievement to an already remarkable Liverpool career.
Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has established himself as one of the most influential players in Liverpool’s history, helping the club win major honours including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup titles.
Although widely recognised for his goalscoring exploits, Salah’s creative influence has also become a defining feature of Liverpool’s attack during his years at Anfield.
Initially viewed primarily as a goalscoring winger, the Egypt captain has evolved into a complete forward capable of both finishing chances and creating opportunities for teammates.
His movement, vision and decision-making in the final third have consistently troubled opposition defences, while his understanding with Liverpool’s attacking players has played a central role in the club’s success under successive title-challenging campaigns.
The possibility of overtaking Gerrard is particularly significant given the former midfielder’s legendary status at Liverpool.
Gerrard spent nearly two decades at the club and was regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest creative midfielders during his career. Salah reaching the same assist tally in fewer seasons highlights the scale of his impact since joining Liverpool.
The 33-year-old has repeatedly delivered high numbers in both goals and assists throughout his time in England, maintaining elite-level performances despite demanding schedules and the pressure of being Liverpool’s main attacking figure.
Friday’s fixture now carries additional importance, with Liverpool chasing a strong finish to the season while Salah attempts to make further history.
Villa Park, however, is expected to provide a difficult challenge. Aston Villa have become one of the Premier League’s strongest home sides, but Salah has built a reputation for producing decisive performances in major moments.
Should he register the record-breaking assist, it would further strengthen arguments that Salah belongs among not only Liverpool’s greatest modern-era players, but also among the finest footballers in the club’s entire history.
For years he has been Liverpool’s leading scorer. Against Aston Villa, he now has the chance to officially become the club’s greatest Premier League creator as well.
