Sadiq features as Valencia fall short against Atletico

Valencia’s battle to steer clear of relegation suffered a setback after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid at the Mestalla Stadium, despite a full match appearance from Umar Sadiq.

The Nigerian forward, who had scored in each of his previous two league outings, was unable to add to his tally as Valencia struggled to break down a disciplined Atletico side. His involvement had raised expectations ahead of the match, particularly with anticipation of a potential Nigerian contest, although Ademola Lookman did not feature for the visitors.

Valencia entered the match seeking to build on recent performances, with Sadiq playing a key role in their attacking rotation. However, the home side failed to convert possession into clear chances, leaving them vulnerable as the game progressed.

The opening stages were marked by a lack of intensity from both teams, with neither side able to establish control. Midway through the first half, Atletico began to show signs of attacking intent. A deft back-heel from Nahuel Molina set up Rodrigo Mendoza, but Valencia’s defence intervened with a crucial block to keep the score level.

After the interval, the pattern of play remained largely unchanged, with few clear-cut opportunities. Atletico again threatened around the hour mark when Belaid found space in the penalty area, only to send his effort off target despite another well-delivered ball from Molina.

As the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Atletico broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. Debutant Iker Luque struck from distance with a composed finish, silencing the home crowd and shifting momentum decisively in favour of the visitors.

Valencia responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but their attacking approach left gaps at the back. Atletico capitalised on this late in the game when another debutant, Miguel Cubo, finished clinically following a precise assist from Antoine Griezmann.

The result leaves Valencia CF in 12th place in La Liga, just five points above the relegation zone with four matches remaining. The pressure is mounting as they prepare for a challenging away fixture against Athletic Bilbao, with their top-flight status not yet secured.

For Atletico, the victory strengthens their grip on fourth place as they continue their push for Champions League qualification. Attention now turns to their upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal, a match that could define their season.
