Rooney’s Salah comparison fuels debate over Neymar’s legacy

Former players divided as discussion on football’s elite reignites

Wayne Rooney has ignited widespread debate after claiming that the best version of Mohamed Salah surpasses that of Neymar, during a television discussion that has since gained significant attention online.

The remarks were made during an episode of The Overlap programme, specifically within its “Unpopular Opinions” segment, where several former players exchanged views on Neymar’s standing among football’s greatest talents.

Studio debate reveals contrasting opinions

The discussion featured prominent former professionals, including Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott, each offering differing perspectives on the Brazilian forward’s career.

The debate was initially sparked by Neville, who argued: “There is no player in the history of the English Premier League better than Neymar at his peak,” a statement that immediately prompted disagreement within the panel.

Keane rejected that assessment, instead putting forward several names he believed surpassed Neymar, including Rooney himself, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo. Wright added Eden Hazard to the list of players he considered superior.

Rooney questions Neymar’s standing

Rooney’s own contribution intensified the discussion further. He stated that he did not regard Neymar as belonging to the very top tier of players, such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He acknowledged Neymar’s success at FC Barcelona, but suggested that the Brazilian remained overshadowed by Messi during that period.

Rooney then introduced a direct comparison with Salah, claiming that the Egyptian forward, at his best, outperformed Neymar at his peak. The statement was met with immediate opposition from Wright, who responded: “Mohamed Salah is not better than Neymar.”

Criticism extends beyond comparison

The conversation also touched on Neymar’s career decisions and reputation within teams. Keane questioned the Brazilian’s commitment, particularly during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.

He suggested that Neymar’s departure from Barcelona created the impression that financial factors played a significant role, and added that the player did not always enjoy strong support within his teams.

Public reaction divides opinion

Following the broadcast, the debate quickly spread across social media platforms, where fans and analysts offered sharply contrasting views.

Some users criticised what they saw as an underestimation of Neymar’s ability and achievements, describing the comments as unfair. Others supported Rooney’s perspective, highlighting Salah’s consistency, influence and statistical output as evidence of his superiority.

A third group argued that comparing players from different contexts and styles remains inherently subjective, ensuring that such debates are unlikely to reach a definitive conclusion.

A debate without resolution

The discussion highlights Neymar’s status as one of football’s most polarising figures, capable of inspiring both admiration and criticism. Rooney’s remarks have added another dimension to an ongoing debate about how the Brazilian compares with his contemporaries.

As opinions continue to differ, the comparison between Neymar and Salah appears set to remain a talking point among fans and analysts alike.
