Cristiano Ronaldo has poked fun at renewed rumours that he is set to marry Georgina Rodriguez after thousands of fans gathered in the streets of Funchal believing the ceremony would take place on Saturday.
The crowd had travelled to the Madeira capital expecting the Portugal forward and his fiancee to exchange vows. It later emerged that the wedding was for another couple, but Ronaldo’s response added a humorous twist to the confusion.
The Al Nassr forward reacted to an Instagram post by Jornal de Madeira with an emoji showing a fit of laughter. The response came one year after Ronaldo announced his engagement to Rodriguez, whom he first met in 2016.
Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, appeared to take the reports more seriously. Writing on the same platform, she questioned why people believed her brother would marry without making the news public himself.
“Why do these people think Ronaldo would get married without ever announcing it himself?”
Ronaldo has previously said that his wedding would not be a large-scale event. He indicated that Rodriguez would prefer an intimate celebration, comments which helped fuel speculation that the couple could choose to marry secretly and away from public attention, according to French broadcaster RMC.
Despite the confusion in Funchal, speculation about a possible Ronaldo-Rodriguez wedding has continued in Madeira. Some reports suggest the ceremony could take place during the summer, possibly within the next few days.
The rumours were further strengthened by reports that 25 taxis with tinted windows had been booked. Other sources claimed the wedding could be held “next week”.
Those reports led to the belief that crowds could gather again in Funchal over the following weekend. However, it remains unclear whether Madeira would be welcoming Ronaldo and Rodriguez or once again celebrating the wedding of a couple unknown to the public.
The latest episode follows a year of heightened interest in the private life of Ronaldo and Rodriguez after they confirmed their engagement. Rodriguez has been Ronaldo’s partner since they met in 2016, while the Portugal captain has remained one of the most closely followed figures in world football.
For now, Ronaldo’s laughing reaction represents the clearest public response from the couple to the latest claims. Neither he nor Rodriguez has confirmed that a wedding is planned for the coming days.
