Roma step up efforts to sign Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens after €43m proposal rejected

Roma remain determined to sign Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, despite the Premier League club rejecting a loan proposal worth an initial €3m with a €40m purchase option, according to Italian outlet romagiallorossa.it.

Gittens is reported to be Roma’s leading target as they look to strengthen their options on the wing. The Serie A club are continuing to prioritise the England winger, even though their opening approach was turned down by Chelsea.

Roma’s offer would have involved a €3m loan fee and an option to make the move permanent for a further €40m, taking the potential value of the deal to €43m. Chelsea rejected the proposal, with manager Xabi Alonso understood to regard Gittens as an important member of his squad.

Despite that setback, Roma have not ended their interest. Sporting director Tony D’Amico is now seeking to establish why Chelsea decided against the proposal and whether there is any possibility of reopening discussions between the clubs.

The report says Roma’s position has not changed: Gittens remains their first choice for the winger position. The Italian club are therefore expected to continue exploring the situation, while assessing whether Chelsea might be willing to reconsider their stance.

Roma’s pursuit is complicated by Chelsea’s view of Gittens, who is considered a key player by Alonso. That status could make it difficult for the Italian side to secure an agreement, particularly after their initial offer was rejected.

However, Roma’s willingness to keep exploring the deal indicates that they have not moved on to another primary target. Their sporting department is focused on understanding Chelsea’s demands before determining whether a revised proposal could bring the two clubs back to the negotiating table.

The latest update, dated 24 August, comes from romagiallorossa.it, which continues to describe Gittens as Roma’s preferred option for the wide position. For now, there is no agreement between Roma and Chelsea, but the Italian club remain committed to pursuing the transfer.
