Real Madrid have told Racing Santander they would prefer to negotiate a deal for midfielder Sergio Martinez rather than trigger the teenager’s €3m release clause, according to Diario AS journalist Jose Felix Diaz.
The 19-year-old has quickly become one of the most sought-after young players in Spanish football after making a significant rise through Racing Santander’s youth system in less than seven months. His progress has attracted interest from several leading clubs, while all parties are now looking to establish an agreement over his future.
Real Madrid have been monitoring Martinez’s development and have made their interest known to Racing Santander. The club are seeking a tripartite arrangement that would secure the player’s eventual move to Valdebebas.
Although Martinez’s contract contains a release clause worth 3 million euros, Real Madrid’s preference is to reach an agreement with Spanish clubs rather than pay the clause directly. That approach has been used by the club in other transfer operations involving teams in Spain.
The teenager’s future could involve more than one possible route. One option under consideration is for Martinez to remain with Racing Santander for another season before moving on. During Real Madrid’s initial discussions, however, the possibility of placing him immediately in the Castilla team was also examined.
His impressive debut in La Liga has added urgency to the situation and made a direct move to Real Madrid’s B team more complicated. Martinez’s first senior performances have strengthened his profile at a time when several clubs are assessing his potential.
Despite the attention surrounding his emergence, Real Madrid’s interest is based on a longer period of observation. Scouting reports compiled over recent months on the Racing Santander academy graduate have convinced the club’s recruitment department at Valdebebas that his progress is not simply a short-term burst of form.
Martinez is also an Under-18 international, further enhancing his reputation as one of the promising young talents currently developing in Spanish football. His acceleration from academy player to La Liga performer has prompted Real Madrid to explore a structured agreement with Racing Santander while considering whether the midfielder would benefit from another season at his current club.
The transfer race for Martinez has therefore begun with Real Madrid attempting to establish a negotiated solution, rather than relying on the €3m clause in his contract. The final decision will determine whether he continues his development at Racing Santander or moves sooner to Madrid, potentially joining Castilla.
