Raul Asencio cleared as three former Real Madrid academy players jailed for one year

Raul Asencio has been acquitted in the leaked video case, while three former Real Madrid youth players have each been sentenced to one year in prison for offences involving child sexual abuse material, according to Cadena SER.

Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia were convicted over a sexual video recorded in Gran Canaria in 2023. Real Madrid first-team defender Asencio was cleared of the charge against him.

The outcome followed a final agreement between all parties after the two young women shown in the video confirmed that they forgave the four players. One of the women was 16 when the recording was made.

That forgiveness removed the only charge faced by Asencio, who had been accused of disclosing secrets. He had shown the video to a third party after receiving it from the other three defendants, despite knowing it had been recorded without the women’s consent.

The victims’ decision also led prosecutors to accept mitigating circumstances in relation to the more serious child sexual abuse material offences involving Ruiz, Rodriguez and Garcia.

Before the agreement was reached, prosecutors had called for prison sentences of four years and seven months for each of the three former academy players. They had also sought a sentence of two years and six months for Asencio.

Asencio fined over drink-driving offence

A separate off-field issue involving Asencio emerged one day before the verdict was announced.

The Real Madrid defender was fined for drink-driving in Gran Canaria after recording 0.90 mg/L in a breath test in San Bartolome de Tirajana on 16 August. That reading was nearly four times the legal limit.

Cadena SER reported that Asencio admitted the offence three days after the traffic stop.

He was ordered to pay 120 euros per day for four months, resulting in a total fine of 14,400 euros. His driving licence was also suspended for eight months.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho addressed the incident at a news conference on Thursday.

He said: “A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do off the pitch can damage your reputation and the club’s reputation. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but repeated mistakes are another matter.”
