Orlando Pirates were left frustrated after being held to a 1-1 draw by Siwelele in their Betway Premiership clash at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, missing a key opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.
The Buccaneers dominated large spells of the encounter but failed to convert their chances, allowing their opponents to snatch a valuable point. Despite the setback, Pirates remain at the summit of the standings, though their advantage over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns is now just a single point with nine matches still to play.
Looking to strengthen their grip on the title race, Pirates started brightly and quickly asserted control over proceedings. Their attacking intent was evident early on, with Oswin Appollis testing goalkeeper Ricardo Goss in the ninth minute, but his long-range effort was comfortably saved.
Goss soon proved to be a central figure in the match, producing a series of crucial stops to keep the visitors in the contest. He denied Yanela Mbuthuma from close range moments later after a well-worked move involving Kamogelo Sebelebele.
The pressure continued to mount as Pirates pushed forward, with Sebelebele and Lebone Seema both unable to find a way past the in-form Goss during a dominant opening spell.
However, against the run of play, Siwelele took the lead in the 29th minute. Former Pirates midfielder Vincent Pule capitalised on a turnover in midfield before firing a low shot past Sipho Chaine to stun the home crowd.
The goal forced Pirates into an even more urgent attacking approach, but their finishing continued to let them down. Mbuthuma and Mbatha both saw efforts saved, while Relebohile Mofokeng and Appollis failed to hit the target.
Pirates resumed the second half with renewed intensity and were finally rewarded seven minutes after the restart. Tshepang Moremi latched onto a precise through ball from Mbatha and finished with a single touch to bring the hosts level.
The equaliser injected fresh belief into the Buccaneers, who immediately searched for a winner. Mofokeng came close shortly after, driving into the penalty area and forcing yet another save from Goss, who remained resolute under pressure.
Despite their dominance and numerous attempts on goal, Pirates were unable to find a decisive second goal, leaving them to settle for a draw that could prove costly in the tightly contested title race.
