Petković’s Algeria future remains uncertain as FAF stays silent after World Cup exit

Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković, with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) yet to issue an official statement following the Desert Foxes’ elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A week after Algeria’s Round of 32 defeat to Switzerland, the federation has remained silent on Petković’s future, fuelling speculation over whether the Bosnian coach will remain in charge.

Despite expectations that the FAF would clarify the situation through its official communication channels, no announcement has been made regarding either Petković’s position or the federation’s plans for the national team.

The lack of communication has extended beyond the coaching situation. The federation has also provided no official update on the condition of injured forward Nadhir Benbouali, while its only major statement concerning the senior men’s team has been a tribute to Riyad Mahrez following the veteran’s retirement from international football.

Reports have claimed that FAF president Walid Sadi travelled to Switzerland to discuss Petković’s future and the possibility of an amicable contract termination.

However, those reports remain unconfirmed, with neither the federation nor Petković commenting publicly on the matter.

Attention has now turned to the FAF’s Federal Bureau meeting, which is expected to take place this weekend at the federation’s headquarters in Sidi Moussa.

The meeting is expected to include a review of Algeria’s disappointing World Cup campaign and could prove decisive in determining Petković’s future.

While speculation over the national team’s coaching position continues, the federation has focused its recent communications on other national teams, including the Algeria women’s side ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the country’s Under-17 beach soccer team.

The silence has only intensified uncertainty among supporters, who are still awaiting clarity over the direction of the national team.

It also mirrors recent episodes within Algerian football, including speculation surrounding former international Anthar Yahia. Reports linking him to a role within the federation generated widespread discussion before fading without official confirmation, with conflicting information later emerging.

For now, Petković’s future remains unresolved, with all eyes on this weekend’s Federal Bureau meeting as Algerian football awaits a definitive decision from the FAF.
