Algeria consider Eric Chelle as pressure mounts on Vladimir Petkovic after World Cup exit

Algeria have reportedly begun exploring potential alternatives to head coach Vladimir Petkovic following the Desert Foxes‘ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Algeria’s campaign came to an end in the Round of 32 after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, a result that has intensified scrutiny over Petkovic’s future despite the coach signing a two-year contract extension only last month.

The Desert Foxes reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for only the second time in their history, benefiting from the expanded 48-team format that allowed the best third-placed teams to progress.

However, hopes of reaching the Round of 16 faded after a subdued performance against Switzerland, with many supporters believing the draw presented a genuine opportunity to advance further.

Tactical decisions under fire

Petkovic has faced growing criticism for several tactical decisions, most notably his decision to start the match without a recognised centre-forward.

The approach surprised both supporters and opponents, with Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi admitting after the game that Algeria’s attacking setup had caught his team off guard.

The defeat has sparked renewed debate over the team’s tactical identity and overall direction under the Bosnian coach.

Eric Chelle emerges as leading candidate

According to reports, the Algerian Football Federation has already made contact with Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle as it evaluates potential coaching options.

Chelle has earned widespread praise since taking charge of the Super Eagles in 2025. Although Nigeria were eliminated from the World Cup on penalties by DR Congo, he later guided the team to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 48-year-old has built a reputation as one of Africa’s rising coaching talents after previously leading Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON.

His familiarity with Algerian football, gained during a previous spell in charge of MC Oran, is also believed to strengthen his credentials.

Federation yet to make final decision

Chelle is reportedly admired for his ability to organise disciplined, attack-minded teams while effectively managing high-profile players, qualities that have placed him firmly on Algeria’s shortlist.

For now, Petkovic remains in charge of the national team, but speculation surrounding his future is expected to intensify as the Algerian Football Federation reviews the team’s World Cup campaign and considers its next steps ahead of the upcoming international calendar.
