Patrick Soko joins Leganés as Cameroon forward seeks fresh start in Spain

Cameroon forward Patrick Soko has joined Spanish second-tier club CD Leganés on loan from UD Almería, with an option to make the move permanent as he looks to revive his career after a difficult spell at his former club.

The 28-year-old attacker was officially unveiled as a Leganés player on Monday, with the club confirming that he will spend the 2026/27 season with the team as they continue their push for promotion back to Spain’s top flight.

Soko’s move represents a new opportunity for the Cameroonian international, who struggled to establish himself as a key figure at Almería following his arrival a year ago.

Despite making 21 league appearances last season, the forward saw his involvement reduced towards the final stages of the campaign, leaving him searching for more regular playing time and a chance to rebuild his momentum.

The switch to Leganés gives Soko the opportunity to become a more influential figure at a club with ambitions of competing for promotion.

The Cameroonian arrives with considerable experience of Spanish football, having previously represented clubs including Racing, SD Huesca, UD Ibiza and UD Almería.

Before moving to Spain, Soko also had spells playing in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, experiences that have contributed to his development as a forward.

Leganés’ director of football Andrés Pardo expressed his excitement about securing the services of the Cameroon player, highlighting the experience and qualities he believes Soko can bring to the squad.

He said he was “very happy to have him with us. He looks happy, content. He is a player with a long career, but still young. In Mexico, Racing, Huesca, Ibiza, Almería. We hope to get the most out of him and that he brings us a lot of joy.”

Soko, who remains contracted to UD Almería until June 2028, said he was grateful for the opportunity and promised to repay the confidence shown in him by his new club.

“When the opportunity arose, I decided it was the perfect place for me,” he said.

The Cameroon international also thanked those who made the move possible and outlined his commitment ahead of the new season.

“I thank God for being here, and the club for their trust. I hope to return it with commitment, dedication, and effort. I hope we have a great season together.”

Soko revealed that he remained patient while waiting for the transfer to be completed, confident that the deal would eventually happen.

“I was training. I knew that sooner or later it was going to get done. Everything turned out the way I wanted, and I am happy to be here.”

The forward also explained that he is prepared to operate in different attacking roles depending on what the coaching staff requires.

“I haven’t spoken with the coach yet, because the day I arrived I had my medical checks. They’ve told me about him, and today we will start getting to know each other. I like playing in all attacking positions and will play wherever they need me.”

For Soko, the move represents another chapter in a career that has taken him across different continents and leagues.
