AS Monaco are set to abandon their pursuit of Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr after the midfielder made it clear that he wants to remain in England.
The Ligue 1 club had identified Sarr as a priority target to strengthen their midfield and had closely monitored his situation during the summer transfer window.
However, their interest has failed to convince the midfielder to return to France, with the negotiations now expected to end without an agreement.
Sarr prefers to stay in England
Sarr’s profile made him an attractive option for Monaco, particularly given his technical qualities, Premier League experience and status as an African champion.
Despite Monaco’s interest, the 23-year-old is determined to continue his career in England.
The midfielder has settled into the demands and intensity of the Premier League and believes remaining in the country offers the best environment for his continued development.
His preference is therefore to establish himself in English football rather than return to Ligue 1 at this stage of his career.
Monaco forced to move on
Sarr’s stance has left Monaco with little room to continue negotiations.
The Principality club had regarded the Senegalese midfielder as an important addition to their squad, but his unwillingness to leave England has effectively brought their pursuit to an end.
Monaco will now have to turn their attention to alternative midfield targets as they continue strengthening their squad.
For Sarr, the decision represents a commitment to his Premier League career. Rather than taking up a new challenge in France, the Senegal international wants to continue competing at the highest level in England and build a long-term future there.
