Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or celebrations end in penalty miss as Bayern draw with Dortmund

Harry Kane’s first match since winning the Ballon d’Or ended in disappointment as his missed penalty helped Borussia Dortmund claim a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.

The Bayern striker had been given a prominent role in the celebrations at Allianz Arena. His image appeared on the stadium’s big screen holding the Ballon d’Or, while he walked out separately to Edward Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory from Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 before making a short speech.

A banner from Bayern supporters described Kane as “no showman, but a footballer as he should be”, although the club marked his individual achievement with a formal presentation.

Kane, who has spoken about feeling outside his comfort zone, appeared unsettled as he cleared grass from the gold studs of his specially made boots before taking the penalty. He accepted responsibility afterwards for a result he felt Bayern should have avoided.

“We definitely had enough chances to win the game. Me on my own had enough chances to win the game, but it was not to be,” he said.

“Obviously, today wasn’t my best performance or the team’s best performance but that’s life, that’s part of being a striker, being a footballer. I could have probably been out there for another hour today and the ball would not have gone in the back of the net.

“You have to take that on the chin sometimes.”

While Kane endured a difficult evening, Niclas Fullkrug continued his excellent form by scoring in Werder Bremen’s 2-0 victory over Hoffenheim. The 33-year-old has found the net in seven consecutive matches and Werder have climbed to fifth after Bayer Leverkusen lost 4-2 at home to Stuttgart.

It was the first free-kick scored by a Milan player in this fixture since Andrea Pirlo almost two decades ago. Milan completed a league double over Inter last season, although Inter still won the title.

Inter are now three points behind leaders Lazio, who came from behind to defeat Cagliari 2-1 at Stadio Olimpico. Substitute Andrea Pinamonti scored a late header as Lazio made it six wins in a row and remained unbeaten after 10 matches. Roma are the only other undefeated side.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma overwhelmed Udinese 5-2, going four goals ahead before half-time, with Donyell Malen scoring again. Roma are Serie A’s highest scorers, raising the possibility of the title returning to the capital for the first time in 25 years.

Lille’s late goal by Olivier Giroud kept them within two points, while Rennes lost 5-0 at Nice. Cameron Archer scored again for Auxerre, but it was their only goal in a 5-1 defeat by Strasbourg.
