Eintracht Frankfurt defender Lilian Brassier has changed his international allegiance from France to Togo and has been selected in the Sparrowhawks’ preliminary squad for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Algeria.
The 27-year-old centre-back was born in Argenteuil, France, to a Guadeloupean father and a Togolese mother. He previously played for France at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level.
After several months of consideration, Brassier has decided to represent his mother’s country. He could make his Togo debut in the qualifying double-header on November 14 and 17.
His inclusion strengthens a Togo defence attempting to recover momentum in Group I. Brassier could form a central defensive partnership with experienced Getafe player Djene Dakonam.
Brassier moved to Eintracht Frankfurt last summer after playing in France for Rennes, Brest and Marseille. During his time in French football, he made 117 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring six goals and contributing three assists.
He has quickly become a regular in the Bundesliga, starting all seven of his appearances under manager Adi Hutter.
Togo began their qualification campaign with a win against Burundi but then lost to Zambia. That inconsistent start has left the Sparrowhawks third in Group I, increasing the importance of their meetings with Algeria.
Patrice Neveu, who was appointed head coach in February, will hope Brassier’s decision adds quality to his squad and persuades other eligible players to commit to Togo.
The Sparrowhawks are seeking a return to the Africa Cup of Nations finals, having last featured at the tournament in 2017.
