Pirates go into this year’s contest with the stronger record since MTN became the competition’s sponsor in 2008. The Buccaneers are seeking a fifth successive MTN8 final triumph after lifting the trophy in each of the past four seasons.
Since 2008, Pirates have won the MTN8 title on seven occasions – 2010, 2011, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2024.
Their recent run has put them in a strong position ahead of another meeting with Sundowns, who have won the competition once since the sponsorship began.
Sundowns’ sole MTN8 success during that period came in 2021, when they defeated Cape Town City 3-2 on penalties.
The 2026 final will therefore give Sundowns the opportunity to add a second title since 2008, while Pirates will attempt to extend their sequence of wins in the competition’s final.
Sundowns’ heaviest defeat in an MTN8 final came in 2016, when they were beaten 3-0 by Bidvest Wits, who have since ceased to exist.
