“I had a lot of confidence and felt important in the team,” he said.

However, the move to the next level never materialised. Sylla believes several factors played a part, including his career decisions, the circumstances around him and opportunities arriving either too soon or too late.

He also accepts that reaching a certain level quickly can lead a player to become comfortable. Although he says he never stopped working, he adds: “The talent, itself, has never left Morlaye.”

Damac spell offers route back

In the summer of 2025, Sylla left Portugal for Damac in Saudi Arabia. The club were relegated at the end of the 2025-2026 season, leaving him playing in the second division.

He acknowledges the move was “not necessarily the choice” he had imagined after his time in Portugal. Sylla says he had greater ambitions, but Damac did not want to allow him to leave and he had to accept the situation.

Guinea ambitions

Sylla rejects the idea that being labelled a major prospect has weighed on him. He says supporters gave him that status because of his football, and that he now has to rediscover that level to justify their belief.

He does not see his challenge as a matter of revenge. Instead, he wants to deliver what he knows he can offer. “Perhaps something was missing, and I think that turning point has finally arrived,” he said.

Playing for the Syli National remains “my greatest achievement”, from watching the team as a child to singing the national anthem as a player. Yet Sylla judges his international record harshly, believing he has delivered less than half of what he owes Guinea.

He says he is now more mature and tactically intelligent, while his time on the bench has also helped him understand what the coach is trying to implement.

His message to the supporters who have followed him since the CHAN is clear: “I must make you even prouder. And that is a promise.”
