Nigeria international Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent move to Coventry City after the club activated the purchase clause included in his loan agreement following promotion to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old midfielder spent the second half of the season on loan from Brentford and will now remain with the newly promoted side after helping them secure a return to the English top flight.
Onyeka’s initial loan deal, agreed during the winter transfer window, contained a clause requiring Coventry to make the transfer permanent if they achieved promotion to the Premier League.
That condition was met after Frank Lampard’s side won promotion, automatically triggering the agreement that has now made the Nigerian midfielder a permanent Coventry player.
The move follows a productive spell with the Sky Blues, during which Onyeka established himself as a regular in the team.
The midfielder made 14 appearances for Coventry after arriving on loan, starting 13 matches and contributing an important goal in a 3-2 victory over Derby County in April.
His performances helped the club complete a successful campaign that ended with promotion back to the Premier League.
Onyeka, who has earned 43 international caps for Nigeria, said he is eager to continue his career at Coventry and outlined his objectives for the coming season.
“I am really looking forward to starting the new season with Coventry. When I joined the team last season, I had two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry reach the Premier League. I am very happy to be back in the Premier League with Coventry. I will give everything for the team, fight for every ball, for my teammates, and bring all my experience. My ambition now is to help the club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as possible in the table.”
The permanent transfer marks another milestone for Coventry as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.
The club will begin the 2026-27 season with an away fixture against Arsenal before welcoming Hull City for their first home league match of the campaign.
Later in the season, Onyeka is set to face his former club Brentford when Coventry host them at the CBS Arena on 30 December. The match will represent the midfielder’s first meeting with the club he has now left on a permanent basis.
Coventry also confirmed the transfer in a social media announcement, declaring that Onyeka had signed a permanent contract with the club.
Having already fulfilled his initial ambitions of helping Coventry win promotion, Onyeka will now turn his attention to establishing the club in the Premier League.
The Nigerian midfielder said his immediate focus is on contributing his experience, competing for every ball and helping the Sky Blues secure survival while aiming to finish as high as possible in the league standings during their return to the top flight.
