Nosa Edward Obaretin: Genoa eye move for Napoli’s Italian-Nigerian defender

Genoa are exploring a move for Italian-Nigerian centre-back Nosa Edward Obaretin from Serie A rivals Napoli as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.

The 23-year-old, who was born in Forli and stands at 1.93m, is under contract at Napoli until 30 June 2027 but has yet to establish himself as a regular at his parent club after a series of loans. Genoa are monitoring his situation closely, with Napoli thought to be open to discussions over his future as they assess their squad depth. Obaretin is currently valued at around €1.5 million, a figure that makes him an attainable target for a mid-table Serie A side.

Obaretin spent last season on loan at Empoli, having previously had spells with Bari and Trento after stepping up from Napoli’s youth ranks in 2023. Across those stints he has accumulated significant senior experience in Italy, including more than 50 appearances in Serie B, which has drawn attention from clubs seeking a physically imposing left-footed central defender.

The former AC Milan youth player moved to Napoli’s academy in 2022, progressing quickly through the Primavera side before being promoted to the first-team squad the following summer. His development through a series of loan moves has left Napoli with a decision to make as he approaches the final year before his contract enters its last 12 months.

For now, Obaretin remains a Napoli player, with any move to Genoa dependent on the two clubs agreeing a deal that reflects his contractual situation and growing experience in Italy’s professional leagues.
