Nigeria step up chase for Michael Kayode amid Italy threat

Nigeria Football Federation are stepping up efforts to secure the international future of Michael Kayode, with plans underway for a decisive meeting aimed at convincing the young full-back to commit to the Super Eagles.

The move, backed by head coach Eric Chelle, highlights the urgency within Nigerian football circles as competition intensifies for the 21-year-old’s allegiance.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Kayode remains eligible to represent both nations. Crucially, he has yet to earn a senior cap for Italy, leaving the door open for Nigeria to make their move.

The NFF are keen to act swiftly amid concerns that Italy could soon call him up, which would permanently tie his international future.

As a result, the planned face-to-face meeting is seen as a key step in outlining Nigeria’s vision and role for the defender within the national setup.

Michael Kayode has emerged as a strategic target for the Super Eagles, particularly as they look to strengthen their defensive options with younger, dynamic profiles.

His style of play combines physicality, recovery pace and attacking intent, aligns with the demands of the modern full-back role.

At Brentford FC, the right-back has established himself as a dependable presence, offering both defensive solidity and forward thrust. His ability to carry the ball, engage in one-on-one situations and contribute to transitions has made him a standout option in his position.

For Nigeria, securing Kayode would represent more than just adding depth.  It would be a statement of intent in the ongoing battle for dual-nationality talents.

The federation has increasingly prioritized early engagement with eligible players, recognizing the importance of acting before rival nations make their move.

With the race now firmly underway, the outcome of the upcoming talks could prove decisive in determining where Kayode’s international future lies.
