Nigeria awaits draw as road to 2027 AFCON begins

Nigeria national football team will find out their opponents in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations later this month, as the draw is set to take place on 19 May.

The Super Eagles are among 48 teams due to participate in the qualification process, which will determine the nations competing at the tournament finals. Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are also included in the draw, as preparations continue for the continental competition.

The qualification matches will be played across three international windows later this year, with fixtures scheduled for September, October and November. Teams will be divided into 12 groups, each containing four sides. The top two teams from each group will secure their place at the finals.

Nigeria enter the qualifiers following a strong showing at the previous edition of the tournament. The team finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, and will be aiming to build on that performance by ensuring a place at the next finals.

The structure of the qualifiers means consistency across all three windows will be crucial, as teams compete for one of the limited qualification spots. With only two teams advancing from each group, early results could prove decisive in shaping the outcome.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also confirmed the dates for the 2027 tournament. The competition will begin on 19 June, with the opening match scheduled for that day, while the final is set to take place on 17 July.

The upcoming tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking a significant moment for football in the East African region. Hosting duties are expected to bring increased attention and investment to the sport across the three nations.

For Nigeria, the focus remains firmly on securing qualification and mounting a strong challenge for the title. The Super Eagles are one of Africa’s most successful teams and will be looking to add to their achievements on the continental stage.

As anticipation builds ahead of the draw, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which teams Nigeria will face in the group stage. The outcome could play a key role in shaping the team’s path to the finals.

With the qualification campaign set to unfold over several months, the Super Eagles will need to balance preparation, squad selection and performance as they aim to book their place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
