Francois Capin-Dulhoste, the public prosecutor, said the liberty and custody judge ordered the players to be remanded in custody after prosecutors requested the measure.
The judicial authorities have declined to provide further details, citing the confidentiality of the investigation and the need to ensure that legal proceedings continue properly.
The identities of the players have not been released while the inquiry remains ongoing. The case has emerged during the international break, meaning details have so far received relatively limited public attention.
Nancy issued a statement acknowledging that two female players from its reserve team had been detained in connection with proceedings over an alleged rape.
“Nancy is fully aware of the seriousness of these events and will co-operate with the judicial authorities whenever necessary,” the club said.
The club added that it would wait for the court’s decision before taking any action against the players involved. It also said it would make no further comment at this stage.
Nancy are sixth in the French second division under manager Oswald Tanchot. The investigation comes as the club continue their push to challenge for promotion and return to the top flight.
