Senegal international Nampalys Mendy, currently without a club after leaving Watford, is being linked with a move to Ligue 2 side FC Metz as the French outfit assess experienced options for their midfield.
Mendy, 34, is available on a free transfer having seen his stint at Watford end on 1 July 2026, and Metz are understood to be exploring the possibility of adding the defensive midfielder’s know-how to their squad ahead of the new campaign. His current estimated value stands at around €700,000, but with no contract in place he would not command a fee.
The former Leicester City player brings significant top-flight experience, with 164 Ligue 1 appearances and nearly 100 in the Premier League across his spells in France and England. He also featured in both the Champions League and Europa League earlier in his career, adding European pedigree to his profile.
Mendy, born in La Seyne-sur-Mer and eligible for both Senegal and France, lifted the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal in 2022 and previously won the FA Cup with Leicester in 2021, honours that underline the level he has operated at. More recently, he returned to France with Lens before joining Watford in August 2025.
Metz, operating in Ligue 2, are thought to view Mendy’s experience in French football as a key attraction as they reshape their squad. For now, the midfielder remains a free agent after his Watford contract expired at the start of July.
