Nagelsmann open to Leipzig return if Demichelis loses his job

Julian Nagelsmann would be willing to return to RB Leipzig if Martin Demichelis is dismissed, according to Sport Bild.

The former Germany national team coach has not ruled out taking charge of his former club again, with an informal exchange between the two parties reported to have taken place. However, discussions have not yet progressed to a substantive stage.

That situation could change if Leipzig’s inconsistent form continues. Sport Bild reports that Demichelis’s position could come under pressure if he cannot produce more stable performances and results before Christmas.

Leipzig are currently fourth in the Bundesliga, but their recent campaign has included both convincing victories and heavy defeats. During Demichelis’s tenure, the club have lost 6-1 to Bayern and suffered 4-1 defeats against Real Madrid and Como.

Those results are understood to have played a significant part in making Demichelis’s position increasingly difficult.

Nagelsmann’s availability has also raised the possibility of interest from Manchester United. The 39-year-old is reportedly among the candidates to replace head coach Carrick if the Premier League club decide to part company with him.

Sky Sports and other media organisations have previously reported Manchester United’s interest, although the club are also understood to be considering alternative candidates.

Nagelsmann was previously considered by Leipzig

A return to Leipzig could partly reflect the timing of Nagelsmann’s departure from the Germany national team.

Nagelsmann resigned as Germany head coach on July 3. Leipzig had appointed Demichelis as Ole Werner’s successor on June 22, before Nagelsmann’s departure.

According to Sport Bild, Nagelsmann had been the “preferred candidate” of some decision-makers at Leipzig at that time. The club instead moved forward with Demichelis, who has since overseen an inconsistent run of results despite some strong wins.

The report does not suggest that contact between Nagelsmann and Leipzig has reached an advanced stage. His potential availability, however, could become relevant if Demichelis fails to improve the team before Christmas.

Leipzig must also be aware that Nagelsmann’s future could be influenced by developments at Manchester United, where he is reportedly being considered alongside other possible appointments.
