‘We respect Rwanda, but we must beat them’ – Eto’o challenges Cameroon U23s

Cameroon football legends Samuel Eto’o and Rigobert Song have visited the country’s U23 national team to motivate the young players ahead of their trip to Rwanda for the 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The visit, which also involved Engelbert Mbarga, was aimed at boosting the confidence of the squad and technical staff led by head coach Guy Armand Feutchine as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Rwanda.

Eto’o, who serves as president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), used the opportunity to remind the players of the responsibility that comes with representing their country.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker encouraged the team to approach the fixture with confidence, determination and a strong desire to secure victory.

He made Cameroon’s expectations clear, insisting that while Rwanda deserved respect, the young Lions must travel with the ambition of winning.

“We respect Rwanda, but we must beat them,” he declared.

The message underlined the federation’s determination to see Cameroon make a positive start to their qualifying campaign, with the players urged to translate the encouragement into a strong performance on the pitch.

Former Cameroon captain and coach Rigobert Song also joined Eto’o during the visit, bringing his experience with the senior national team to the interaction with the younger generation.

The presence of the two prominent figures offered the U23 players an opportunity to receive encouragement from individuals who have played significant roles in Cameroon’s football history.

Beyond addressing the squad, Eto’o also met with members of the technical team to discuss their preparations and the conditions surrounding the team.

The FECAFOOT president assured the staff that their concerns would be addressed, with the federation seeking to provide the necessary support to help the squad prepare effectively for the assignment.

The visit was therefore not limited to a motivational address, but also included discussions about the team’s working conditions ahead of an important international fixture.

For Feutchine and his players, the challenge now is to turn the backing of the federation’s leadership and former national team stars into a positive result in Rwanda.

Cameroon will be hoping that the visit provides an additional boost as they pursue qualification for the 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations, a competition that offers young players an opportunity to represent their country on the continental stage.

The involvement of Eto’o and Song also highlights the importance of experienced figures in encouraging the next generation of Cameroonian footballers.

However, the words of encouragement will count for little unless the players deliver when they take to the pitch in Kigali.

With the qualifying assignment approaching, the U23 Indomitable Lions must now respond to the challenge and demonstrate the confidence and determination demanded by their federation president.
