The Morocco under-23 national team has canceled its friendly against Saudi Arabia, originally set for 26 March, as regional instability in the Middle East disrupts international football schedules.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed the decision, citing logistical challenges affecting youth fixtures.
While the federation has not publicly detailed the specific reasons behind the cancellation, the broader context of tensions involving the US, Iran, and Israel has impacted travel and planning for several matches in the region.
For Morocco, this means a quick pivot to ensure that its young players continue to receive competitive opportunities.
In response, the U23 side will now face the Ivory Coast U23 team in a double friendly at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé.
The first match will take place on 26 March, with a second fixture scheduled for 30 March.
The revised plan aims to maintain the squad’s rhythm and provide a platform for emerging players to gain international experience ahead of future African competitions.
The U23 team is currently without a permanent head coach following Mohamed Ouahbi’s promotion to lead Morocco’s senior national side.
Interim staff are overseeing preparations, giving younger players a chance to adapt to competitive matches under new management.
“The adjustment ensures our players continue to develop uninterrupted despite external challenges,” a federation spokesperson said.
Morocco’s approach reflects the federation’s broader strategy of nurturing talent early, blending players from local academies with those of Moroccan descent playing abroad.
This mix has become a defining feature of African youth football, offering pathways for players to progress from continental youth competitions to senior national teams.
Meanwhile, the U20 squad is also active, facing Union Touarga Sport and Club Omnisports de Meknès in friendly matches during a training camp running from 23–31 March.
These fixtures are designed to expose players to senior club opposition, helping them gain experience and build confidence ahead of continental tournaments.
The upcoming double friendly against Ivory Coast promises to be a showcase for African talent, giving scouts, fans, and national team selectors a chance to observe some of the continent’s brightest young players in competitive action.
