Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that Morocco Under-17 captain Marouane Bentaleb has signed his first professional contract, underlining the club’s confidence in one of its most promising academy players.
The 16-year-old has agreed a deal that will keep him at the club until mid-2029, marking a significant milestone in his early career. Bentaleb, who is capable of operating both in defence and midfield, has already built a reputation for his versatility and composure on the ball.
His development has been closely followed within Ajax’s renowned youth system, and the club’s Under-17 coach Marijn Beuker highlighted the youngster’s qualities. “Marouane is a modern defender who can also play in midfield. He is very composed on the ball and has a good feel for the game,” he said.
Bentaleb’s leadership credentials have also been evident on the international stage. As captain of Morocco’s Under-17 side, he led the team to a historic triumph at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations 2025, where they secured their first-ever title. His performances at the tournament earned him a place in the competition’s Best XI, further cementing his growing reputation.
At club level, Bentaleb has similarly taken on responsibility beyond his years. He currently captains Ajax’s Under-17 team and is regarded as a key figure within the academy, both for his performances on the pitch and his influence in the dressing room.
Speaking after signing his contract, Bentaleb expressed pride in his progress and his role at the club. “Ajax is a big club and I’m proud to play here. It’s a huge mark of appreciation that I was chosen as captain in my second season,” he said.
Reflecting on his leadership role, he added: “It’s an honour and I want to fulfil that role as well as possible and be an extension of the coach. I try to help my teammates and get the maximum out of everything in all circumstances. The captain’s role suits me, I think.”
Ajax has long been recognised for nurturing young talent, and Bentaleb’s emergence is seen as another example of the club’s ability to develop future stars. His continued progression within the academy setup has made a strong impression, with coaches praising not only his technical ability but also his maturity and leadership.
