Rangers are exploring a move for South African defender Olwethu Makhanya, who currently plays for MLS side Philadelphia Union. The 22-year-old centre-back, born in Durban, has emerged as a potential target for the Scottish Premiership club as they assess defensive options for the coming seasons.
Makhanya is under contract with Philadelphia until 31 December 2027, meaning Rangers would need to negotiate a fee rather than pursue a free transfer. He is currently valued at around €2 million, a figure that is likely to shape any talks between the clubs if discussions progress beyond initial interest.
The right-footed defender, who stands at 1.85m, has established himself in Philadelphia’s back line, making 13 MLS appearances and passing the 1,000-minute mark in league action. He has also featured in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, scoring once in four games in continental competition.
Makhanya joined Philadelphia in July 2023 from South African side Stellenbosch FC in a deal worth €445,000, and has since been part of a squad that went on to win the 2024–25 Supporters’ Shield. That domestic success and his regular involvement in a competitive MLS environment have contributed to his rising profile and market value.
With more than a year and a half remaining on his current deal, Philadelphia are under no pressure to sell, and any formal approach from Rangers would have to reflect the defender’s contractual security and recent development in the United States.
