Morocco coach Jorge Vilda has labelled Algeria a “formidable opponent” as the North African rivals prepare to meet in a potentially decisive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 group match in Rabat on Thursday.
The hosts face their neighbours at Stade Moulay El Hassan in the second round of Group A fixtures, with both sides knowing victory would all but seal a place in the quarter-finals after winning their opening games without conceding.
Morocco sit top of the group on goal difference after a commanding 4-0 win over Kenya in their first match. Sakina Ouzraoui and Maryem Atiq were both on the scoresheet, while Ibtissam Jraidi struck twice to complete an emphatic start to the tournament for the home nation.
Algeria also began with a statement result, defeating Senegal 2-0. Captain Marine Dafeur led by example, with 20-year-old Melissa Bethi also finding the net as the Algerians kept pace with Morocco at the summit of the group.
‘Formidable opponent’
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Vilda was quick to praise Thursday’s opponents and underline the scale of the task facing his side.
The Morocco coach described Algeria as a physically and tactically tough team and stressed that his players would have to match that intensity if they are to secure a second successive victory and become the first side in the group to book a quarter-final spot.
Vilda said he planned to ensure his squad “put in everything required” to take control of the section and avoid leaving their fate to the final round of fixtures.
Quarter-final race in the balance
With only the top teams guaranteed progression, the stakes are high for both Morocco and Algeria in Rabat.
A win for either side would put them in a commanding position to advance, while defeat would mean the losers having to wait until the third and final group game to discover whether their Women’s Afcon campaign will continue into the knockout phase.
Both teams will go into the derby buoyed by strong defensive showings on the opening matchday, having yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
For Morocco, the attacking form of Ouzraoui, Atiq and Jraidi offers further encouragement, while Algeria will look again to the leadership of Dafeur and the emerging talent of Bethi as they aim to derail the hosts’ momentum.
The match is expected to draw significant attention across the region, with the neighbours’ early confidence, identical records and a quarter-final place within reach adding extra edge to an already fierce North African rivalry.
