Chelsea have made England forward Morgan Rogers the most expensive British footballer of all time after completing a deal worth a reported £117m from Aston Villa.
The 23-year-old has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033, the two Premier League clubs confirmed on Tuesday, with neither disclosing the fee. However, Sky Sports reports that the package eclipses the sum of up to £116m Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this month.
The transfer also surpasses Chelsea’s previous record outlay on Moises Caicedo, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115m in 2023.

Speaking to the club’s media after completing the move, Rogers underlined the scale of the opportunity he believes he has taken by switching to west London.
“I’m so excited,” said Rogers in a club statement. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Rogers, who is comfortable playing on either flank or in an attacking midfield role, becomes the latest high-profile addition as Chelsea’s ownership continues its aggressive recruitment strategy focused on young talent tied to long-term contracts.
European glory with Villa
Rogers arrives at Chelsea on the back of a breakthrough spell at Aston Villa which culminated in European silverware.
He joined Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024 and went on to score 31 goals in 125 appearances for the Midlands club. His form earned him a first England cap later that year.
The forward played a key part in Villa’s Europa League triumph in May, scoring in the 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the final as Unai Emery’s side secured their first major European trophy since 1982.
Last season was Rogers’ most productive in the Premier League, finding the net 10 times as Villa consolidated their status among England’s top sides.
Rising England star
Rogers’ domestic performances helped him become a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squad. He featured in seven of England’s eight matches at the most recent World Cup, where the Three Lions finished third.
His versatility and work rate have been widely praised, and Chelsea will be hoping he can translate his international and European form into consistent displays in the Premier League.
The fee involved reflects both his impact at Villa Park and his perceived potential, as clubs compete for emerging English talent under homegrown player rules and with the added pressure of profitability and sustainability regulations.
Chelsea’s rebuilding continues
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and are seeking a resurgence under their new head coach, with Rogers expected to be a central figure in a revamped attacking line-up.
The London club have invested heavily in young players since their change of ownership in 2022, often handing long-term contracts to spread transfer costs and build a core for the future.
Rogers will now join pre-season preparations ahead of Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture, away to Fulham on 24 August, as the club looks to return to the Champions League places and justify the record-breaking outlay on one of England’s brightest attacking prospects.
