VfL Wolfsburg have been relegated to Bundesliga 2 after suffering a painful defeat to SC Paderborn 07 in the relegation play-off, with Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura unable to prevent the club’s fall from the German top flight.
Wolfsburg entered the two-legged play-off after finishing 16th in the Bundesliga standings and were forced into a survival battle against second-tier side Paderborn.
The first leg at the Volkswagen Arena ended goalless, leaving everything to play for in the decisive return fixture.
Wolfsburg made a dream start in the second leg by scoring in only the second minute, briefly raising hopes among supporters that the club would secure another season in the Bundesliga.
However, the match quickly turned against them after a red card in the 13th minute reduced the visitors to ten men.
Forced to play most of the contest with a numerical disadvantage, Wolfsburg gradually lost control of the game as Paderborn grew stronger.
The hosts equalised before half-time and continued to push forward throughout the remainder of normal time.
With neither side able to find a winner, the tie moved into extra time, where Wolfsburg’s resistance finally collapsed.
Paderborn scored the decisive goal during the additional period to secure promotion and condemn Wolfsburg to relegation.
The defeat brought a miserable end to a deeply disappointing campaign for the former Bundesliga champions, whose inconsistent performances throughout the season ultimately proved costly.
Amoura, one of the club’s most closely followed players this season, did not start either leg of the play-off.
The Algerian international came off the bench in both matches but struggled to make a major impact.
He entered in the 66th minute of the first leg as Wolfsburg searched for a breakthrough, while in the decisive second leg he was introduced in the 108th minute during extra time as the team desperately attempted to save their Bundesliga status.
By that stage, however, momentum had already shifted firmly in Paderborn’s favour.
Relegation now places major uncertainty over Wolfsburg’s squad heading into the summer transfer window, with Amoura expected to attract attention from several clubs.
The Algerian forward had already been linked with a move away from Wolfsburg last summer before remaining at the club, with hopes that another season in Germany would further increase his value and development.
Instead, the club endured a difficult campaign that ended in relegation, a situation likely to force Wolfsburg into reconsidering their plans during the transfer window.
Interest in Amoura is still expected to remain strong, especially as relegation could reduce Wolfsburg’s bargaining position financially.
