Milan came from behind to beat Manchester United 4-2 in Wroclaw in the final friendly before domestic leagues resume, exposing a poor second-half display from Michael Carrick’s side.
United scored early in both halves but conceded on each occasion, before Milan took control after a series of substitutions and secured a convincing comeback victory.
The result leaves Carrick with plenty to consider, after his players produced an extremely disappointing performance for much of the second half. Online publication Euro-Football.Ru identified three Manchester United players whose displays fell well below the required standard, although the list could arguably have been longer.
Mateus Cunha, who made little impact in attack, was another player who might have been included among those who struggled.
Manchester United 2-4 Milan (1-1)
Players were rated out of 10, with each starting on an assessment of 6.0 before kick-off.
Bruno Fernandes – 3.0
It was an awkward and ineffective performance from Bruno Fernandes, despite the fact he supplied the assist for United’s opening goal with a cross in the second minute.
That contribution was his only successful delivery that created a shooting opportunity. Fernandes repeatedly gave the ball away in dangerous areas, losing possession three times in his own half, while his five attempts at goal failed to produce the desired outcome.
He also missed a penalty, sending the ball too close to the centre of the goal rather than aiming for a corner.
Fernandes was involved in the build-up to Milan’s first goal in a negative way. After a throw-in, he lost his duel with Yashari, then jogged calmly across his own penalty area when he needed to try to prevent Ruben Loftus-Cheek from being picked out.
Luke Shaw was unable to cover two opponents at once, leaving United vulnerable.
Luke Shaw – 3.0
Milan settled the match during a short spell after the large number of substitutions had been made. United’s left side was particularly exposed, with Shaw and Lisandro Martinez appearing badly out of sync.
Samuel Chukwueze and Ruben Loftus-Cheek repeatedly found space on that flank or in the inside-left channel without facing meaningful resistance. Chukwueze supplied the cross for Goncalo Ramos to score, while Loftus-Cheek later finished into the near corner himself.
Chukwueze also had too much time and room to deliver the cross for Cisse during Milan’s second goal. Shaw attempted to make amends late on with a promising ball towards Fernandes, but the move came to nothing when Fernandes ended it with an awkward sliding challenge.
Senne Lammens – 3.0
Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was criticised for appearing far too passive.
He made an effort to react to Milan’s first goal, but became increasingly static as the match progressed, watching the visitors’ attempts find the net and then collecting the ball from inside his goal.
Lammens also appeared to rely on raising his arm and hoping for an offside decision as Cisse and Ramos finished Milan’s chances. He was beaten at his near post by Loftus-Cheek for another goal.
The goalkeeper did make four saves, which prevented the scoreline from becoming even more damaging for United.
