Manchester United draw up five-man shortlist as Michael Carrick future comes under scrutiny

Manchester United have reportedly drawn up a five-man shortlist of potential replacements for Michael Carrick, suggesting the club has made a decision about the manager’s future, according to the Daily Star.

The uncertainty surrounding Carrick has prompted speculation over several possible successors. The Sun reports that Brighton are confident Fabian Hurzeler will remain in charge despite potential interest from Manchester United.

Eddie Howe is also ready to return to management and has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite to take over at Old Trafford, according to the same newspaper.

Manchester United are understood to have reservations about appointing Antonio Conte, with doubts over the Italian manager coming as uncertainty increases around Carrick’s position.

Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly been approached about succeeding Carrick after Manchester United’s dismal start to the campaign, the Daily Star says.

The club’s difficulties are also said to be extending beyond the manager’s position. The Daily Mail reports growing tensions between director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell.

Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has accused Bruno Fernandes of putting pressure on Carrick because the captain does not want to deal with that pressure himself, according to the Daily Mirror.

Fernandes was also the victim of a burglary while playing for Manchester United in their Champions League defeat by Como in Italy on Wednesday night, the Daily Mail reports.
