Mali’s Nene Dorgeles ruled out for two months after operation

Mali international Nene Dorgeles is expected to spend up to two months out of action after undergoing successful surgery for pubalgia, bringing a temporary halt to what had been an impressive campaign with Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K.

The 23-year-old winger underwent the procedure on 21 May in a hospital in Paris after struggling with the injury for several weeks, according to the Malian Football Federation.

Dorgeles had emerged as one of the standout African performers in the Turkish Super Lig before the setback, scoring nine goals and contributing several assists in 25 appearances for Fenerbahçe this season.

His last match came on 26 April, after which concerns over his physical condition intensified.

The injury is a blow not only for Fenerbahçe but also for Malian football supporters, who have watched the winger establish himself as one of the country’s most exciting attacking talents in Europe.

In recent years, Mali has continued to produce technically gifted footballers capable of competing at the highest levels across Europe, particularly in France, Turkey and Belgium.

Dorgeles’ rise has been viewed as another positive sign for the future of the Eagles of Mali as the country continues building a new generation of internationally recognised players.

The player addressed supporters after the operation, reflecting on both his recovery and a demanding season in Turkey.

“After a long and intense season, it was very important to protect my body and get through this surgery. Now it’s time for recovery, rest, and recharging the batteries after such a challenging year,” Dorgeles said.

“This season, we weren’t able to achieve all our goals, and of course, that’s disappointing. But I’m sure the next season will be better, and I’ll give everything, come back stronger, and help the team achieve its goals.”

The winger also spoke about the lessons learned during the campaign and thanked supporters for their encouragement throughout his injury struggles.

“This season taught me a lot from both the good and tough moments, and I’d like to thank everyone for their support and messages during this period. It really means a lot to me.”

Dorgeles’ performances before the injury had strengthened his reputation in Turkish football, with his pace, creativity and finishing ability making him one of Fenerbahçe’s most dangerous attacking options during key moments of the season.

The timing of the injury, however, arrives during an important period for both club and country.

With Mali continuing preparations for future international competitions, including the 2026 World Cup cycle and upcoming continental assignments, the recovery of players competing in Europe remains closely monitored by national team officials.

For Francophone African football, Dorgeles’ situation also reflects the increasing influence of West African talent in major European leagues beyond France.

While many players from Mali traditionally begin or continue their careers in Ligue 1, an increasing number are now making significant impacts in Turkey, Belgium and other emerging football markets.
