Mali leave out Bissouma as new faces join squad for Iran friendly

Mali have named a refreshed squad for their upcoming international friendly against Iran, with Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma notably missing from the list as the West African side continues its period of transition under interim leadership.

The Eagles of Mali are due to face Iran on June 4 in Turkey, in what will be a one-off fixture during this international window.

The match comes as the national team continues to operate without a permanent head coach, with Alou Badra Diallo in interim charge.

The squad announcement has drawn attention across Francophone West Africa, particularly because of the absence of Bissouma, who has often been a central figure for Mali.

However, in recent years, he has also faced criticism for his performances at international level, including during the last Africa Cup of Nations.

No official explanation has been given for his omission.

However, speculation in Mali suggests the midfielder may be prioritising his club future after a difficult season in England.

Bissouma featured in only 11 Premier League matches for Tottenham Hotspur, who narrowly secured their top-flight status on the final day of the season.

His contract expires on June 30 and is not expected to be renewed, leaving his future uncertain as the summer transfer window approaches.

His absence leaves a notable gap in midfield, especially given his experience and leadership role in previous squads.

Alongside the omissions, the list also introduces three new players, including several from Mali’s domestic league.

Mohamed Lamine Sissoko of Djoliba AC, Sékou Maïga of Binga FC, and Issa Djiguiba of AS Réal Bamako have all been included as part of a broader effort to widen the pool of talent available to the national team.

Despite the changes, several established names remain in the squad. Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, captain Hamari Traoré, and midfielder Mohamed Camara are all included and are expected to form the spine of the team in Turkey.

In attack, Lassine Sinayoko arrives in strong form after playing a key role in AJ Auxerre’s survival in Ligue 1.

Another forward attracting attention is Mamadou Sangaré, who enjoyed an impressive campaign with RC Lens and recently won the Marc-Vivien Foé award, given to the best African player in the French top flight.

His recognition has been widely celebrated in Francophone football circles, with many viewing it as evidence of Mali’s growing influence in European leagues.

The changes also come at a time of broader restructuring within Malian football administration.

With a new federation president in place and former international Mohamed Sissoko now serving as an advisor, there is a sense that the national team is entering a new phase focused on renewal and long-term planning.
