The 19-year-old Karlsruher SC striker had reportedly drawn criticism from Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi, who publicly expressed disappointment after the young forward declined the invitation for international duty.
However, Ben Farhat has now broken his silence to clarify the circumstances behind his withdrawal, stressing that he continues to hold full respect for Tunisia and its coaching staff.
“This decision was very difficult for me to make,” the striker explained.
“I have enormous respect for the national team, the coaching staff and everyone who works for Tunisian football. My decision in no way reflects a lack of respect towards them.”
The teenage forward revealed that the main reason behind his choice was the need to carefully manage his recovery after suffering a serious injury earlier in the season.
Ben Farhat spent four months sidelined after breaking his foot, a setback that significantly disrupted his development and momentum at club level.
Having only recently returned to action, the striker admitted he felt participating in a demanding international tournament immediately after such a lengthy absence could risk aggravating his condition.
“This season, I was sidelined for four months due to a broken foot,” he added.
“After such a serious injury, taking part in a World Cup, with all the physical demands and preparation that entails, would have been a huge burden.”
“At that point, I felt it was better to prioritise my recovery and make this decision in the interests of my fitness and my future.”
His explanation sheds further light on the difficult balance many young players face between representing their country and protecting their long-term physical condition following major injuries.
While Tunisia lose an exciting young attacking option ahead of the tournament, Ben Farhat’s statement is likely to ease some of the criticism that followed the initial reports surrounding his withdrawal.
For Lamouchi and the Tunisia coaching staff, attention will now turn toward identifying alternative attacking options as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
Meanwhile, Ben Farhat is expected to remain focused on rebuilding full match fitness and consistency with Karlsruher as he continues his recovery and development following a challenging campaign.
Despite missing out on the World Cup, the striker’s comments suggest he still sees his long-term international future with Tunisia once he feels physically ready to compete again at the highest level.
