Liverpool are interested in signing Tottenham defender Djed Spence after his impressive performances for England at the most recent World Cup, but face competition from clubs in both the Premier League and Italy.
According to a report by The Sun, Liverpool have identified the 25-year-old as a potential summer signing. However, their interest is understood to be less advanced than that of several other clubs tracking the versatile defender.
Spence was described as England’s standout player during the tournament, where he excelled in the knockout-stage matches against Mexico, Norway and Argentina. The right-back can operate on either side of the defence, adding to his appeal for clubs looking for defensive versatility.
Despite his displays for the England national team, Spence is not currently first choice in Tottenham’s defensive pecking order. He sits behind Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson in the club’s ranking of options.
Tottenham are believed to be willing to sell Spence during the summer transfer window as manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape the squad. The club have finished 17th in the Premier League in each of the past two seasons, and the manager is seeking to rebuild the team.
Spence is valued at about £35m, a figure that is considered affordable for more than one interested club. Liverpool admire the former Middlesbrough player, but current indications suggest that several rivals have shown stronger interest at this stage.
The leading contenders include clubs from Italy as well as other sides in the Premier League. Inter Milan held discussions over a possible move for Spence earlier this summer, while city rivals AC Milan are also believed to be interested in recruiting him.
Liverpool’s interest therefore comes amid an increasingly competitive pursuit of the England defender. Although the Merseyside club are monitoring the situation, they may need to move quickly if Inter Milan, AC Milan or another Premier League side decide to make a formal approach.
Spence’s ability to play on both flanks, his age and his reputation following the World Cup have contributed to the level of interest in him. Tottenham’s apparent willingness to consider a sale has also increased the possibility of a transfer, with the anticipated £35m fee unlikely to prevent a number of clubs from exploring a deal.
For now, Liverpool remain among the clubs considering Spence, but the strongest momentum appears to be elsewhere. Inter Milan have already held talks, AC Milan are monitoring developments and further Premier League interest means Tottenham could face several competing offers this summer.
