Bryan Mbeumo has been named captain of Cameroon for Thursday’s Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifier against Comoros in Garoua.
Cameroon head coach David Pagou confirmed the Manchester United striker will wear the armband at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium during a press conference on Wednesday, one day before the opening qualifying fixture.
Pagou ended speculation over the identity of his captain when questioned by the media about his choice.
“Without saying too much, Bryan Mbeumo will be captain,” David Pagou told the media.
Mbeumo will be assisted by Arthur Avom and Samuel Kotto, who have been appointed vice-captains for the match.
The decision comes during an international break in which several of Cameroon’s regular senior players are absent from the squad. Pagou has consequently placed the leadership responsibility on Mbeumo, who is regarded as one of the important attacking players in his plans for the team.
The appointment also marks a change in leadership for the Indomitable Lions.
Mbeumo takes over the captaincy from Nouhou Tolo, who led Cameroon during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. Tolo wore the armband during that tournament but has not been included in Pagou’s squad for the current international break.
With Tolo unavailable, Pagou has opted to give the responsibility to Mbeumo, with Avom and Kotto named as his deputies.
Thursday’s match will therefore be significant for Mbeumo beyond his role in attack, as he will lead the side into the latest stage of Cameroon’s qualifying campaign.
It will also be the first time Pagou has selected a captain since taking charge of the Indomitable Lions.
Mbeumo’s appointment gives him the opportunity to lead the team as Cameroon begin their campaign for qualification for the 2027 AFCON.
The match against Comoros is scheduled to take place in Garoua, with Mbeumo expected to wear the armband when the two teams meet.
Pagou’s decision comes after a period in which Cameroon have had to make changes to their leadership group because of the absence of several established senior players.
The coach has nevertheless placed his confidence in Mbeumo and selected him to take responsibility on the pitch.
Arthur Avom and Samuel Kotto will provide support as vice-captains, ensuring that the new leadership structure is in place for the Comoros fixture.
Mbeumo’s appointment also represents a succession from Tolo, who had been the team’s captain at the 2025 AFCON.
The focus will now shift from the captaincy decision to the match itself, with Cameroon preparing to face Comoros in Garoua.
For Mbeumo, the fixture will provide his first opportunity to lead the Indomitable Lions since Pagou became head coach.
The striker will therefore begin his tenure as Cameroon’s captain in an AFCON 2027 qualifier, with Avom and Kotto alongside him as the team’s vice-captains.
