Tanzanian giant Young Africans SC have announced the dismissal of head coach Pedro Gonçalves, despite the club’s strong domestic form this season.
The Portuguese tactician departs after around six months in charge, with the club currently leading the league standings on 51 points from 21 matches. During his tenure, Young Africans produced impressive numbers, scoring 51 goals and conceding just five, underlining their dominance at the domestic level.
Assistant coaches Abdihamid Moalin and Patrick Mabedi have been appointed to take charge of the team on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Despite their domestic success, Young Africans’ campaign in continental competition proved less convincing. The club competed in the group stage of the CAF Champions League but finished third in their group, behind Al Ahly SC and AS FAR Rabat, missing out on qualification for the knockout rounds.
The contrast between strong league performances and disappointment on the continental stage is understood to have played a role in the decision to part ways with Gonçalves. While the team showed attacking efficiency and defensive solidity domestically, their inability to progress in Africa’s premier club competition fell short of expectations.
The timing of the dismissal has drawn attention, given the club’s position at the top of the table and their statistical dominance. However, it reflects the high standards set by Young Africans, particularly regarding performances beyond domestic competition.
Moalin and Mabedi will now be tasked with maintaining the club’s momentum as the season enters its decisive phase, while also stabilising the team following the managerial change.
Young Africans remain in a strong position domestically, but the focus will now be on how the squad responds to the transition in leadership as they aim to close out the campaign successfully.
