Lazio are exploring the possibility of signing Axel Tuanzebe as they look for affordable options to strengthen a defence regarded as fragile.
The 28-year-old Congo international is available without a transfer fee following his time at Burnley. His situation has attracted the attention of the Italian club, who are assessing whether he could provide a cost-effective solution for manager Gennaro Gattuso, according to Laziochannel.
Tuanzebe’s availability is understood to be particularly appealing to Lazio because the club are working with a limited budget. Sporting director Fabiani is prioritising opportunities that would not require a significant outlay, and a free transfer would allow the club to reinforce their squad without paying a fee to another side.
The defender is capable of operating in more than one position. Although primarily a centre-back, he can also play on the right side of the defence, giving Lazio an additional degree of flexibility when selecting their back four.
His physical qualities, pace and aggressive approach are considered well suited to the demands of Gattuso. Those attributes are among the reasons Tuanzebe has emerged as a player of interest while Lazio examine possible ways to improve their defensive options.
Tuanzebe’s estimated market value is €5m, but his current availability means Lazio could potentially sign him without a transfer fee. That combination of experience, versatility and financial accessibility makes him an attractive candidate for a club seeking solutions within tight spending limits.
The defender was developed by Manchester United and has experience of playing in Serie A after a spell with Napoli. That previous exposure to Italian football means he already has an understanding of the league and its demands, rather than having to adjust to the competition for the first time.
He has also played for several prominent English clubs, including Manchester United, Aston Villa, Stoke City and Burnley. Those spells have given him experience at a number of different clubs and in different defensive environments.
Tuanzebe has won 17 international caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His background at international level, combined with his time in England and Italy, is viewed as another positive factor as Lazio consider whether he could add depth and experience to their defence.
At this stage, Tuanzebe is being considered as a possible target rather than a confirmed signing. Lazio’s interest comes as the club continue to search for reinforcements who fit both Gattuso’s tactical requirements and the financial approach being adopted by Fabiani.
