Lamine Yamal’s World Cup-winning season with Spain has propelled the Barcelona forward to the front of the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or and left him on the brink of breaking Ronaldo Nazario’s long-standing record as the youngest winner of the award.
The 19-year-old capped what has been described in Spain as a historic campaign by playing a central role in his country’s World Cup success, adding the sport’s biggest prize to an already crowded honours list and cementing his status as one of the global game’s standout figures.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Yamal – who has just turned 19 – now regards the Ballon d’Or as the ultimate target in his career, and his current trajectory has made him the leading candidate for the 2026 edition.
Record-breaking rise
Yamal’s impact is being measured against some of football’s greatest names. Only Pele and Italy’s Giuseppe Bergomi have lifted the World Cup at a younger age, and both were key contributors when their national teams claimed the trophy.
The winger’s rapid rise has been built on sustained success rather than a single tournament. Before winning the World Cup, he helped Spain to the Euro 2024 title and collected the Young Player of the Tournament award for his performances at that competition.
Despite his age, Yamal has already earned 33 caps for Spain. At club level he has won three La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona, leaving the Champions League as the most significant team trophy still missing from his collection.
Individually, he has already swept the game’s major youth accolades, taking both the Kopa Trophy for the world’s best young player and the Golden Boy award, underlining his reputation as Europe’s standout emerging talent.
Domestic dominance with Barcelona
Yamal’s club season was as impressive as his exploits with the national team. He was named La Liga’s Player of the Season after scoring 16 league goals and providing 11 assists. Those 16 goals saw him share the Zarra Trophy, awarded to the league’s top Spanish goalscorer, alongside Ferran Torres.
Across all competitions for Barcelona, Yamal has already played 151 matches, scoring 49 goals and supplying 44 assists. Those numbers, achieved before his 20th birthday, highlight both his consistency and his influence within the team.
He wore the number 10 shirt for Barcelona last season, a symbolic responsibility at a club where that jersey has previously been associated with some of the greatest players in its history.

Yamal went into the World Cup managing a left hamstring problem that affected his physical condition and limited his minutes, yet he remained one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking outlets.
As the tournament progressed his influence grew. He scored against Saudi Arabia in the group stage and won the penalty that gave Spain the opening goal in their semi-final against France.
Statistically, he was one of the World Cup’s most effective dribblers. Only Lionel Messi completed more successful dribbles during the tournament, with the Argentina captain registering 28 to Yamal’s 27. Yamal’s performances have placed him among the favourites for the 2026 Ballon d’Or and given him a realistic chance of becoming the youngest winner in the award’s history.
The current record belongs to Ronaldo Nazario, who collected the Ballon d’Or in 1997 at the age of 21 years and 92 days. If Yamal were to win in 2026, he would surpass that mark.
He finished second in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting behind Ousmane Dembele, but his case is considered stronger this time after adding both the World Cup and another La Liga title to his CV, along with outstanding individual statistics.
However, there is recognition in Spain that the distribution of votes among several Spanish players could influence the final outcome, with team-mates potentially taking points off one another in the ballot.
Market value soars
Yamal’s achievements have been reflected in his market valuation. After the World Cup, specialist website Transfermarkt updated its figures, listing the Barcelona forward as the joint most valuable player in world football at €220m, level with Erling Haaland, who also impressed at the World Cup.
The teenager is currently on his summer break after an extended, trophy-laden season but is expected to return to Barcelona with even greater expectations surrounding him.
