Kylian Mbappe penalty for Real Madrid sparks fury in Catalan press

Kylian Mbappe’s penalty for Real Madrid against Racing Santander has provoked a fierce reaction in the Catalan media, with the decision at El Sardinero described as a controversial refereeing call that inflamed the home players and supporters.

The incident occurred in the 10th minute, when Mbappe dribbled past a Racing Santander defender inside the penalty area. Referee Munuera Montero initially awarded a penalty after deciding that the France striker had been fouled by Brati.

The decision was confirmed following a review of the incident on the video assistant referee system, VAR, prompting strong protests from the Racing players and crowd. Mbappe took responsibility for the spot-kick and gave Real Madrid the lead in the 11th minute.

His powerful effort went to the goalkeeper’s right. Aguirrezabala read the direction of the shot but was unable to keep it out.

Catalan newspapers criticise decision

Barcelona-based newspaper Sport led its coverage with the headline: “Scandal at El Sardinero! Anger over Mbappe’s controversial penalty.”

The paper argued that the contact between Mbappe and Brati was extremely slight, yet Munuera Montero awarded the penalty after consulting VAR. It said the decision generated widespread anger among the home side.

Mundo Deportivo also criticised the call, describing Real Madrid’s opening goal as coming from a “ridiculous penalty”. According to the newspaper, Brati’s involvement amounted to no more than a light touch of his arm against Mbappe’s chest before the forward went down inside the area.

The newspaper added that VAR referee Milla Alvendiz did not ask Munuera Montero to review the incident, because he did not believe the contact represented a clear error.
