Jurgen Klopp has made the worst start of any Germany manager after collecting just one point from his opening two matches, according to Sport1.
The 57-year-old began his tenure with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam before suffering a 0-1 defeat by Greece in Augsburg on Sunday. The loss was Klopp’s first in charge and came in his first home match as Germany coach.
His record of one draw and one defeat leaves him as the first Germany manager to take only one point from his first two games. No previous coach had begun the job with fewer points.
Klopp is only the third Germany manager to remain without a victory in his opening two matches. The other two were Sepp Herberger and Helmut Schon, although both started their reigns with two draws.
Herberger and Schon later guided Germany to World Cup titles, but Klopp will be hoping to avoid extending his winless run when his side face Serbia on Thursday.
The difficult beginning is a marked contrast with Klopp’s previous managerial appointments. When he took charge of Mainz 05 in 2001, he led the club to consecutive victories in his first two matches and did not suffer a defeat until his eighth game. He remained with Mainz 05 until 2008.
Klopp also opened his Borussia Dortmund tenure with two wins after being appointed in 2008. His first defeat came in his sixth match, and he stayed at the club until 2015.
His start at Liverpool followed a similar pattern. Klopp won his first two games after taking over in 2015 and did not lose until his sixth match. He remained Liverpool manager until 2024.
The meeting with Serbia on Thursday will therefore provide Klopp with his first opportunity to change the direction of his Germany tenure after an opening draw and defeat.
