Nigerian centre-back Kelechi John has joined Uniao Santarem on a free transfer from Sanjoanense, strengthening the Liga 3 side’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign.
The 27-year-old moves across the Portuguese lower leagues after his spell with Sanjoanense, who compete in the Campeonato de Portugal’s Serie B. His switch keeps him in familiar surroundings but represents a step into a higher division, with Uniao Santarem playing in Portugal’s third tier.
John, a specialist at centre-back, adds experience and physical presence to the heart of Santarem’s back line. At an age where many defenders are regarded as entering their peak years, he arrives with the expectation of being ready to contribute immediately rather than serving as a long-term project.
His time at Sanjoanense provided him with regular exposure to the competitive environment of Portuguese football, which should ease his adaptation to Liga 3. The move also underlines Uniao Santarem’s strategy of targeting players already acclimatised to the country’s playing style and conditions.
John’s transfer was completed as a free deal, allowing Uniao Santarem to reinforce their squad without paying a fee to their CP – Serie B counterparts.
