Four Kaizer Chiefs players are at risk of missing the upcoming Soweto Derby later this month due to suspension concerns, as the club prepares for a demanding run of fixtures.
Flavio Silva, Mfundo Vilakazi, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo have each accumulated three bookings so far this season. With two matches remaining before the highly anticipated clash on Sunday, 26 April, any further caution would rule them out of the fixture.
The situation presents a potential selection challenge for Chiefs, who are currently enjoying a strong run of form. However, the looming threat of suspension could complicate their preparations for one of the biggest matches on the domestic calendar.
Chiefs are set to travel to Limpopo for a double-header, where they will face Magesi on Wednesday before taking on Polokwane City on Saturday. The back-to-back fixtures in the same province are expected to test both the squad’s depth and discipline.
The Glamour Boys head into these matches on the back of four consecutive victories. Their latest success came in a 2-0 win over TS Galaxy, with goals from Silva and Glody Lilepo securing the result.
This recent run of form has seen Chiefs build momentum, having previously recorded wins against Durban City, ORBIT College and Dikwena Tsa Meetse. The victory over ORBIT College, in particular, stood out as a convincing 3-1 performance.
Earlier in the campaign, Chiefs also edged past Rise and Shine with a narrow 1-0 win. On that occasion, Ndlovu made a decisive impact, scoring a late goal after coming off the bench in only his second appearance for the club.
Despite these positive results, disciplinary issues now threaten to disrupt the team’s rhythm. Silva received his third yellow card during a 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC in February, a match in which he also found the net.
Vilakazi, meanwhile, was booked for the third time this season during a goalless draw against Siwelele in October. His recent performances have suggested a return to form, making his potential absence another concern for the coaching staff.
Ndlovu and Ngcobo also find themselves in a similar position. Ndlovu was cautioned in the win over Durban City, while Ngcobo picked up his third booking in the match against Magesi.
With two important fixtures still to play before the derby, Chiefs will need to balance their pursuit of continued success with the risk of losing key players.
The coming days could prove decisive in shaping their squad for one of South Africa’s most eagerly awaited encounters.
