Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that attacker Glody Lilepo has joined Libyan club Al Ahly Benghazi with immediate effect, ending speculation over the Democratic Republic of Congo-born forward’s future.
The transfer was announced after Lilepo was not included in the Kaizer Chiefs squad that travelled to Spain for the club’s pre-season tour. His absence had prompted questions about whether he remained part of the club’s plans, but Kaizer Chiefs have now formally confirmed his departure.
“Democratic Republic of Congo-born forward Glody Makabi Lilepo has completed a move from Kaizer Chiefs to Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi, following an agreement on the transfer fee between the two Clubs,” said the club in a statement.
The announcement confirms that an agreement was reached between Kaizer Chiefs and Al Ahly Benghazi over the transfer fee. The club did not provide details of the fee or disclose the length of Lilepo’s contract with the Libyan side.
Kaizer Chiefs added: “The Club wishes Lilepo success in Libya and throughout the remainder of his football career.”
Lilepo’s move brings an end to his time with Kaizer Chiefs, although the club’s statement did not include further details about the circumstances surrounding the transfer. The announcement was limited to confirming the agreement between the two clubs and wishing the player well.
His future had been the subject of speculation since he was left behind as Kaizer Chiefs began their pre-season preparations in Spain. That omission was the clearest indication that his position at the club was uncertain, before the transfer was officially announced.
Al Ahly Benghazi will now become the next club in Lilepo’s career, with the move taking effect immediately. Kaizer Chiefs have not announced whether there will be any further developments relating to the transfer.
