Kaizer Chiefs have completed the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana, who returns to South African football after two seasons abroad.
The 27-year-old winger joins the Soweto club as a free agent after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem. He will link up with his new team at Naturena after gaining experience in North Africa and the Middle East.
“Chiefs sign Bafana International Elias Mokwana,” the club said in its announcement.
Mokwana, who comes from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, moved overseas in 2024 after leaving Sekhukhune United for Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis.
His route into professional football was not straightforward. Financial difficulties meant he had to give up his sports science studies, but he continued to pursue a career on the field.
He began attracting attention while playing for Gemsbok Classic in the ABC Motsepe League. His performances earned him a move to National First Division club Platinum City Rovers, where he continued to develop.
Mokwana’s form then brought interest from top-flight teams. During the 2021/22 season, he made 22 appearances and scored three goals, performances which helped secure his next career move.
In May 2022, he signed a three-year contract with Sekhukhune United. He became an important part of the club’s attack and made more than 50 league appearances over two productive seasons.
His progress at club level was followed by international recognition. Mokwana received his first Bafana Bafana call-up in November 2023 and was included in the squad that finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The winger moved to Esperance Sportive de Tunis in August 2024 on a three-year deal. During his time in Tunisia, he helped the club win the league title, Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup.
Mokwana then joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem on a season-long loan in August 2025. He played 24 matches, starting 16 of them, and scored in a game against Al-Taawoun.
His return to South Africa now gives Kaizer Chiefs another attacking option as the club continues to strengthen its squad. Mokwana will be hoping to make an immediate impact after establishing himself both domestically and internationally.
