Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz falls ill after Stellenbosch draw

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz was attended to by doctors after falling ill at the end of Tuesday’s 1-1 Betway Premiership draw with Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium.

The Frenchman missed the live on-pitch interview immediately after the match, while assistant coach Dillan Shepperd represented Kaizer Chiefs at the post-match press conference.

Shepperd said Da Cruz had suddenly become unwell after the final whistle at Soccer City and had vomited.

“Ya, the coach has fallen ill,” Shepperd told reporters. “He was vomitting so ya, he needed the doctors checking on him, to see if he is ok.”

Stellenbosch FC moved in front three minutes after half-time when Sinoxolo Kwayiba finished first time inside the penalty area. The goal followed good work on the left by Terence Mashego.

Kaizer Chiefs were level in the 58th minute, with Mduduzi Shabalala producing a fine finish at the near post.

The draw extended Da Cruz’s unbeaten start in the Betway Premiership. Kaizer Chiefs have now drawn five of their eight matches, with their other results comprising three wins.

The Soweto club are fourth in the league standings, nine points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, but have played one match fewer.

Kaizer Chiefs will turn their attention to continental competition on Saturday when they travel to Zambia to begin their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary second round campaign.

They face Red Arrows at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00. The second leg will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium next weekend.
