Juventus to assess Weston McKennie before AZ Alkmaar tie

Weston McKennie remains a doubt for Juventus’ Europa League trip to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday after suffering muscle fatigue.

The American midfielder was replaced at half-time during Juventus’ 2-0 victory over Napoli on Sunday. Medical examinations the following day found no injury, but confirmed muscle fatigue.

Juventus are not training on Tuesday after head coach Luciano Spalletti gave his players a day off. The squad will return to Continassa on Wednesday, November 4, when McKennie will be assessed.

Spalletti will then decide whether McKennie is fit enough to travel to the Netherlands or whether the midfielder should remain in Turin to recover ahead of Sunday’s Serie A meeting with Fiorentina.

The uncertainty over McKennie comes as Juventus continue to manage a serious injury crisis. Several regular starters are unavailable, including Kenan Yildiz, Manuel Locatelli, Khephren Thuram, Francisco Conceicao and Nico Gonzalez.

Juventus have collected seven points from their opening three Europa League matches of the season.
