Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid has been plunged into fresh uncertainty after those close to the forward indicated he is prepared to skip pre-season training to push through a move to Barcelona.
The Argentina striker, currently at the centre of intense transfer speculation, has publicly stated that he wants to leave Atletico – comments he made while on duty with his national team at the 2026 World Cup. His stance has sparked a major stir across the Spanish media and heightened tension between the player and his club.
Barcelona are intensifying efforts to sign the 24-year-old in the current summer window, but Atletico are refusing to negotiate unless his full release clause – set at €500m – is paid in full, an amount effectively designed to deter any realistic bid.
Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Atletico have ordered all players who took part in the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina – including Alvarez – to report back for pre-season on 10 August. The squad is due to assemble at the club’s training camp as preparations begin for the new campaign.
However, sources close to Alvarez have reportedly made it clear he does not intend to return on that date, in a move seen as a direct attempt to increase pressure on the Madrid club to sanction his sale to Barcelona.
World Cup comments ignite transfer storm
The row over Alvarez’s future escalated during the World Cup, when he made his desire to leave Atletico public.
Taking questions while with the Argentina squad at the 2026 tournament, he confirmed he wanted to depart the Spanish capital, a declaration that quickly dominated headlines in Spain and beyond.
His remarks were interpreted as a clear challenge to Atletico’s hierarchy, who have long insisted that any club interested in the forward must meet the €500m buyout clause written into his contract.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are understood to be pushing hard to capitalise on the player’s wishes, seeing Alvarez as a key attacking reinforcement. But there is no indication they are willing – or able – to come close to the figure demanded by Atletico.
Atletico’s hard line and a looming deadline
According to Marca, Atletico have moved to assert control over the situation by setting the 10 August reporting date for all World Cup finalists, explicitly including Alvarez.
The return date is seen within the club as a test of the player’s commitment and professionalism amid ongoing speculation. Atletico expect him to link up with the “Rojiblancos” squad as normal and have given no public sign of softening their stance on either the transfer fee or disciplinary consequences should he fail to appear.
Those within Alvarez’s camp, however, have signalled that he is prepared to escalate the standoff by refusing to attend training, in what would amount to an open act of defiance aimed at forcing Atletico to negotiate his departure.
Three-week countdown to a possible rebellion
With roughly three weeks to go until the reporting deadline, the situation is poised on a knife edge.
Either Alvarez will return as ordered and rejoin Atletico’s pre-season preparations, or he will effectively “raise the banner of rebellion” against the club’s management by staying away and risking fines, suspension or further sanctions.
The coming weeks are likely to determine whether Atletico can hold firm against both player power and Barcelona’s interest, or whether the pressure from Alvarez – and the possibility of a disrupted pre-season – persuades them to reconsider their position.
